Jacob

Jacob

By Ramone - June 13, 2009
In the womb he grasped his brother's heel;
as a man he struggled with God.
He struggled with the angel and overcame him;
he wept and begged for his favor.

- Hosea 12:3-4
There is a lot that could be said about Jacob. His name itself means "he grasps the heel", which is a Hebrew idiom for "he takes advantage of" or "he deceives". God saw all of that in Jacob. God saw Jacob as he actually was. But He also saw deeper than that, deep into his soul--
"The Lord does not look at the things man looks at.
Man looks at the outward appearance,
but the Lord looks at the heart."

- 1 Samuel 16:7
God saw a kid longing for approval, taught at a young age to grab what he wants even if it did not belong to him. God saw Jacob's nature, but He saw something deeper, too. And so He let Jacob go through a lot of crap in his life. Because He loved him. Just to bring him to this place so that He could heal him.
"I have seen his ways, but I will heal him;
I will guide him and restore comfort to him."

- Isaiah 57:18
I think I'm beginning to understand Jacob. I'm a lot like him. I think most of us are a lot like him. We supplant, we usurp, we try to get what has been promised to us through our own means and efforts, expecting God to bless us along the way ("God helps those who help themselves"). And then we get upset at all the crap we have to endure. But God loves us too much to leave us to our ways. All us little Jacobs.
